Seiichi Miyake

Seiichi Miyake (三宅 精一, Miyake Seiichi, February 13, 1926 – July 10, 1982) was a Japanese inventor. He is best known for inventing tactile ground surface indicators, also known as Tenji blocks or tactile blocks.

Miyake invented the blocks in 1965 to help a visually impaired friend navigate city streets safely. The first installation of these blocks was in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, on March 18, 1967, near a school for the blind. His invention has since been adopted worldwide and has become an indispensable part of accessibility infrastructure for people with visual impairments. The design is very simple. Raised bumps arranged in rows or circles help to indicate directions or warnings.
